Selfless Service (Seva) in Jainism
Seva (selfless service) is a fundamental aspect of Jain spiritual practice, deeply rooted in the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence), Sanyam (self-discipline), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness). Engaging in Seva is a means to purify the soul, reduce karma, cultivate compassion, and progress on the path to liberation (Moksha). It fosters humility, empathy, and a sense of responsibility toward the well-being of others.
The Philosophy of Seva
Jainism teaches that all living beings are interconnected and must support one another. This principle is beautifully captured in the Jain aphorism:
“Parasparopagraho Jīvānām”
“All life is bound together by mutual support and interdependence.”
Seva in Jainism is not limited to helping others; it also includes self-service, which means taking responsibility for one’s actions, maintaining purity in thoughts and deeds, and performing one’s own duties without depending on others.
